Seeing Red

I'm generally a guy who is very slow to anger. I'm relatively even-tempered, and always try to remind myself that triumph and disaster, as Rudyard Kipling said, are both impostors. The heights of triumph and the valleys of disaster are usually short-lived, and to allow either to trick you into believing that yours is a life that will always be lived in splendor or despair is to have a deluded grasp on reality. I once won over $14,000 in the Florida lottery, and I've seen many of my chosen horses fall short by a nose, both literally and metaphorically. It isn't that I haven't allowed myself to experience the sweetness of conquest, or the bitterness of downfall, but I've long tried to keep things in perspective.

Well, a FINE and good morning to you sports fans…Welcome to Super Bowl Sunday!

I’d like to introduce you to someone today. His name is Ryan Asdourian and he, like many who read these pages, lives with Multiple Sclerosis.

Ryan is one of those fun-geeky type guys who works for a little software firm in my neighborhood of the country. Well, he’s actually more on the fun side of that fun-geeky spectrum but he gets up in the morning, works hard, volunteers in his community, loves his life and plays equally as hard as he works. He even has a second, part-time job…

Last year, Ryan decided that it was time to do something for the cause so dear to each of us even though we’d rather all spend our time and energy on another. Ryan wanted to raise money for research into a cause and eventually a cure for MS and to help people living with Multiple Sclerosis.

As I noted last week, my second CCSVI surgery was halted because of the inability to enter the catheter into my left jugular vein with the tools and equipment available in the outpatient surgery center. We are currently awaiting scheduling of the third surgery to be done at the hospital. I am currently injecting the prescribed anticoagulant medication twice a day while I await notice.

I have paroxysmal atrial fibrillation that began about 2 years ago. I first got the A-fib condition in 2008 following a hernia operation. As a side note, the hernia arose from straining to evacuate bowel waste because of MS. I was getting the a-fib condition about once every 2 weeks for a day or so initially, and then it tapered way off to once every month or 2. During the summer and fall of 2010, it seemed the frequency had increased to about once a week, and was being brought on by strenuous exercise, which in my case is swimming for 90 minutes 3-5 times a week with a swim team. It didn’t go out of rhythm during the exercise; rather it was happening as the heart rate came down in the 2-3 hours following.

1. The sun is shining. So today will be a good day. Everything looks better with sunshine on it.

2. I have numbers floating through my head like no tomorrow. There are a few unknowns that I’ll just have to figure out estimates for. I need to make a written financial plan for this trip.

3. My whiteboard isn’t getting used as much as it should be. Over the weekend it fell by the wayside and hasn’t resurfaced yet. I need to get back to making lists and sticking to them. It makes a difference.

4. I’m heading over town today to visit a friend from work and her son. It’ll be a trip down memory lane, with a visit to storytime at the library and some time at kindergym. While I’m down there I’ll stop in and pick up Anselm’s birthday present. (His birthday’s not for a couple of weeks yet, but I’m avoiding stress and getting it done early.)

5. Anselm came home from school early on Monday and ran a good fever so he had to take Tuesday off from school although he was completely fine. Which means he had energy to spare which in turn drained me. I haven’t been sleeping well.

At the time I was diagnosed with MS there were several relationships in my life that were causing more pain and frustration than comfort and encouragement. There was a ‘dance’ going on that I couldn’t see. It was only when I changed the ‘steps’ did I see how much more relaxed I was, and how much conflict I had been experiencing on a daily basis for most of my life.

My social worker at the hospital suggested I read a book by Harriet Lerner called Dance of Anger. I’ve never been one for self-help books, and I would never have sought it out, but it changed my life. Now I feel frustration and sorrow when I see friends going through the same struggle of trying to break patterns. Every single one of my friends, without exception, is stuck in an unhealthy relationship cycle. Whether it’s with a friend, partner, parent, etc they all have at least one. I almost feel like my disease gave me a gift, because without MS I don’t know if I’d have ever broken the patterns in my own life.

The following is a summary of the book. My wish for you is that you find a copy and read it.

Gratitude for Sleep With (or Without) an MS Attack

Sleep comes in fits and starts when I am in the midst of an MS attack. I’ve been told by my doctor that my brain goes into overdrive trying to re-route signals and assessing damage and generally freaking out during times of active exacerbation.

As I head into the third week of this “thing,” sleep is becoming more and more spotty.

I get VERY tired but will only sleep for a few hours before something will wake me and I lay awake three to five hours, too exhausted to get up and do anything, too awake to shut down the bouncing of my mind. If I am able to get back to sleep by 5 a.m., I sleep until about 8 a.m. and wake again; this time tired and cranky.

Last evening, while driving home from Poker Night (my self-help group for men living with multiple sclerosis) I heard something on the radio about sleep.

There is a layer of snow on everything outside this morning, seems there was a light snow fall during the night.

We did see it start to snow late last night not too long before Richie turned the lights off; this morning woke up early as it was freezing in the bedroom.

Richie jumped up and closed the window and put another blanket n me which helped me sleep on again which was very welcome.

Woke up later crying because of the pain in my arms, they hurt a lot now, so much more than even last month.

Getting quite scared about how my MS has accelerated just recently, maybe the sp catheter operation has made the progress faster but maybe it was happening anyway.
